Firefly Trail
Firefly Trail
The Firefly Trail is a planned 39-mile rail-to-trail project from Athens to Union Point in Northeast Georgia, connecting Athens-Clarke, Oglethorpe, and Greene Counties.
Winterville's section of the trail is located on Main Street, where the historic rail line, known as the Athens Branch of the Georgia Railroad, once operated. The rail line branched off to the still-active Augusta-to-Atlanta line in Union Point and passed through the towns of Woodville, Maxeys, Stephens, Crawford, Arnoldsville, and Winterville on its way to Athens.
Support for the trail comes from SPLOST, the Georgia Department of Transportation, and the Athens-Clarke County Department of Leisure Services, as well as the many donors and riders within the community.
